Stain Removal for Washable Fabrics and Clothing
Use this handy stain removal chart to save money and your washable fabrics and clothes.
Don't throw away clothing and other washable fabrics when you can easily clean them by following these directions.

Use this chart with stain removal and cleaning formulas for almost every
washable fabric in your home.

|
Mild Dishwashing Liquid |
Rinse immediately in warm water.
Sponge with dishwashing liquid. |
| Hydrogen Peroxide |
For bleach safe fabrics, sponge lightly with hydrogen peroxide. |
| Baby Formula
|
Enzyme Detergent |
Launder in enzyme detergent or use enzyme presoak. |
| Meat Tenderizer |
Cover stain with a paste of meat tenderizer and water.
Let sit for 15 minutes, then wash as usual. |
| Ballpoint Pen Ink
|
Hair Spray |
Saturate stains with hair spray and wash out with warm water. |
| Rubbing Alcohol |
Sponge stains with rubbing alcohol, then rinse in clear water. |
| Blood
|
Ammonia |
First wash stain with plain cold water, then with mild dishwashing detergent in cold water. If stain remains, sponge with a solution of 3 tablespoons of ammonia in 1 gallon of cold water. |
| Hydrogen Peroxide |
For set stains, on bleach safe fabrics, sponge with hydrogen peroxide. |
| Enzyme Detergent |
Launder in cold water with enzyme detergent. |
| Candle Wax
|
Rubbing Alcohol |
Sandwich the fabric between 2 layers of paper towels and apply a hot iron. Paper towels will absorb the wax.
Remove remaining stain with a solution of rubbing alcohol and water. |
| Chewing Gum
|
White Vegetable Shortening |
Rub gum with an ice cube to harden gum.
Scrape off as much as possible.
Work shortening into remaining gum and wash out with warm water.
Repeat shortening and warm water until gum is removed. |
| Chocolate
|
Mild Dishwashing Liquid |
Treat fresh stain with dishwashing liquid and warm water. Treat remaining stain with commercial spot remover. |
| Enzyme Detergent |
Rub enzyme detergent into stain before laundering. |
| Coffee
|
Boiling Water |
Stretch fabric over a bowl, hold in place with a rubber band, and pour boiling water through stain. |
| Hydrogen Peroxide |
For bleach safe fabrics, sponge with hydrogen peroxide. |
| Borax |
Sponge with a solution of 1 tablespoon of borax in 1 cup water. |
| Crayon
|
White Vegetable Shortening |
Work shortening into stain, then wash out shortening and crayon with mild dishwashing liquid and water. Treat remaining stain with commercial spot remover. |
| Cream or Butter
|
Mild Dishwashing Liquid |
Wash with dishwashing liquid and warm water. Treat remaining stain with commercial spot remover. |
| Enzyme Detergent |
Rub enzyme detergent into stain before laundering. |
| Egg
|
Salt |
Soak stain in solution of 1 tablespoon salt in 1 cup cold water.
Then pretreat stain with enzyme detergent before washing. |
| Fruit Juice
|
Hydrogen Peroxide |
Stretch fabric over a bowl, hold in place with a rubber band, and pour boiling water through stain.
Sponge remaining stain with hydrogen peroxide. |
| Glycerine |
If stain has set in, work in glycerine and let it sit for 30 minutes.
Rinse with white vinegar and launder as usual. |
| Chlorine Bleach |
On white or color-fast cotton or cotton blends, soak 2 to 4 minutes in 1 part bleach to 4 parts water.
Rinse with white vinegar and launder as usual. |
| Grass or Pollen
|
Rubbing Alcohol |
Sponge with rubbing alcohol to remove most plant stains. |
| Hydrogen Peroxide |
For bleach safe fabrics, sponge stain with hydrogen peroxide. |
| Grease
|
Talcum Powder |
Sprinkle stain with powder, let sit for 15 minutes, brush off, then wash in mild dishwashing liquid and warm water. |
| Enzyme Detergent |
Pretreat stain with enzyme detergent, then wash as usual. |
| Petroleum Jelly |
Rub dry grease stain with petroleum jelly, then wash with mild dishwashing liquid. |
| Greasy Cuffs and Collars
|
Shampoo |
Lather shampoo into stain, then launder as usual. |
| Latex Paint
|
Rubbing Alcohol |
Wash fresh paint as soon as possible with soap and warm water.
Soak dried latex stain in rubbing alcohol before laundering. |
| Lipstick
|
Glycerin |
Soften stain with glycerin before laundering as usual. |
| Make-up Foundation or Powder
|
Baking Soda |
Dip toothbrush into baking soda and water. Brush until stain disappear. |
| Mud
|
Mild Dishwashing Liquid |
Let mud dry completely. Brush to remove surface dirt.
Pour cool water through stain to remove more dirt.
Wash with mild dishwahing liquid. |
| Oil Paint
|
Turpentine |
Provide adequate ventilation and wear rubber gloves.
Sponge on turpentine until paint softens
Scrape off excess paint then launder as usual. |
| Rust Stains
|
Lemon Juice and Salt |
Rub stain with lemon juice and salt.
Leave white fabrics in sun for a few hours to bleach.
Leave colored fabrics indoors for a few hours.
Rinse and launder as usual. |
| Tar
|
Glycerin |
Scrape off surface tar.
Work glycerin into remaining stain. Launder as usual. |
| Urine
|
White Vinegar |
Wash first with mild dishwashing liquid and cool water.
Then saturate stain with white vinegar to remove odor.
Wash as usual. |
